To Maureen and all those at The Dance Gallery,
I know this email will come as a surprise to my beloved dance-teacher, Maureen. Such is the beauty of how the internet can reconnect us all. I am incredibly proud to be a graduate of The Judy Hunter School of Dance (and as one of Maureen’s long-time students, will consider myself one of The Dance Gallery as well.) My journey of dance began in 1967 – and I graduated from the studio & Kam-High in 1982. It goes without saying that to this day, I still feel so blessed and have hundreds of fond memories from my years with Maureen (& Judy!) My sisters, cousin and I all studied under their tutelage with pride of being “raised” as dancers with one of the finest schools in BC, and Canada - while also being provided exceptional training, a sense of family and a whole lot of life’s joys. And this mentoring extended far beyond my 15 years as part of their training-centre – the mentoring continued on, as I was welcomed back as a guest-teacher or turned to my amazing & giving teachers, Maureen and Judy, for career guidance, as I forged ahead with my dance-career in the Lower-Mainland. I know that the immense qualities instilled in me were integral to my own successful career as a Dance-Educator, Adjudicator and now editor of my own dance-publication. It is always with a full heart that I can reflect on my dance-years – the excitement I felt at new recital, festival & exam seasons – the comfort of knowing I was “in good hands” as I aspired to my own dreams of dance! I wish you all a fantastic dance-season – and many more to come! I extend my endless gratitude to Maureen Duggan – a Dance Educator of incredible passion and one of my life’s greatest mentors! Warm Regards, Ronelle Roode, Editor – A Passion for Dance Magazine
This past summer has seen several significant changes at The Dance Gallery. Over this time I have searched for the best way to convey to you the roots of these changes and the impact they will have on The Dance Gallery and our students.
Alternatively, I've decided to share with you a bit of The Dance Gallery's history and my own dedication to mentoring young dancers. It is my hope that with a clearer understanding of these histories and an understanding of The Dance Gallery's pathway to the future that families will be able to make informed choices about their children's dance school. In 1964 I was recruited from England by Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrelly, co-founders of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, to teach for them at the Canadian School of Ballet in Kelowna. This early experience was instrumental in my commitment to building a strong technical foundation for all dancers whilst maintaining a high degree of professionalism. Most importantly this period was also where I recognized the importance of nurturing life-long student/teacher mentor relationships. And so when I arrived in Kamloops over 40 years ago I chose to work for Judy Hunter's School of Dance as it had also been built upon similar standards and values. When I purchased the school and established The Dance Gallery in 1996 I remained committed to technical excellence and began to foster mentor relationships between our current and previous students and our teachers. I continue to work as a practical teaching supervisor for the Royal Academy of Dance with student teachers across BC. The Dance Gallery also provides ongoing opportunities for our young dancers to learn from our previous students who have established themselves professionally in dance companies, the theatre, and as choreographers. These relationships are built upon the provision of a space whereby all students can meet their greatest potential, in a safe and encouraging atmosphere. It is with this in mind that I can confirm Lori Birk and Marylou Joseph will be integral components of The Dance Gallery as we move forward. Both Lori and Marylou embody the character and values The Dance Gallery aspires to and both share my commitment to the art of teaching and the inspirational mentorship of young dancers. Marylou will continue to lead the Ballet program and Lori will teach and choreograph both recreational and competitive jazz classes as well as lyrical and hip-hop classes. The Dance Gallery remains an established business built upon a set of standards and values that have evolved from being a constant presence in the Kamloops dance community. Welcome back to a new season - we look forward to seeing you next week. And remember dance is your soul in flight! Sincerely, Maureen Duggan

Registration for the 2012/2013 classes will take place Sept 4th and 5th, from 12-3pm and 7-9pm at the studio...see you there and we look forward to an exciting season! From Lori Baber Birk As another successful season comes to a close it is important to once again thank all of the dancers, parents and volunteers for such a great year. That being said, I would like to inform the dancers and their families of an important change for the upcoming 2012/2013 year. Laura Bishop will no longer be teaching at the Dance Gallery. I recognize this will have an impact on our dance community and therefore wanted to inform you of this change as soon as possible.
